When I first set out to create my 2025 calendar, I knew I wanted to capture the essence of Nova Scotia’s seaside – the place I now call home. Each of the 12 illustrations is inspired by something quintessential Maritime, from lobsters and lighthouses to the small findings from my latest beach combing adventure.
The Creative Journey
My design process begins with something simple: cutting out raw shapes from old cardboard boxes. I love the freedom of just cutting away without worrying too much about perfect lines or colours. For me, this step is about embracing imperfection and letting the shapes take on a life of their own. It’s a freeing contrast to the precision that comes from my background as a graphic and brand designer, where every detail is scrutinized.
Once I have these rough cutouts, I like to add an extra layer of tape or small snips. This brings out even more texture. I then scan them and begin digitally refining the composition. This combination of analog and digital methods gives each illustration a distinct texture and personality. It allows me to stay true to the tactile, handcrafted feel I strive for, and also use the flexibility of digital tools.
Personal Stories in Every Month
Many of the illustrations in this calendar are tied to personal memories. For February, I was inspired by a recent experience that brought me closer to my Cape Breton home. This past winter, our neighbour took us smelt fishing on the frozen North River – a true Maritime tradition. Standing on the ice, watching the quiet flow beneath, felt both thrilling and serene. So I just had to capture smelts for February.
Other designs reflect the landscape and the wildlife that surrounds me here on Cape Breton Island. From seagulls to lupines, each illustration tells a small story of the beauty I get to witness daily.
Thoughtfully Made, Start to Finish
I wanted the calendar itself to feel as special as the illustrations. That’s why I chose uncoated paper with a soft, natural texture, perfect for writing on. It offers a beautiful matt finish, and it’s also FSC® certified, chlorine-free, and wood-free – important considerations for me in choosing a more sustainable option.
